The 7 Skins Method & Are You Doing It Correctly?
First off, what exactly is the 7 Skins Method?? Well it’s the latest K-Beauty crave that’s hit the internet and of course the gals at Mask Time were all in on trying it out so we could give you our opinion on it!
WHAT IS IT?
So the 7 Skins Method is to put it simply applying a lightweight toner or essence on to your face after cleansing up to SEVEN times! Hence the number ‘7’ and in Korea toners are often referred to as ‘skins’ so in essence (pun intended) it literally translates to the ‘7 Toner Method’.
We know it sounds kinda crazy but there is method to the madness, Korean beauty bloggers have been buzzing about this new beauty regime and who doesn’t want to have that flawless glass skin look?
Layering on toner or essence up to several times, your skin is able to absorb more of the hydrating ingredients leading to soft supple and glowing skin!
HOW DO I DO IT?
Step 1: Cleanse your face as you normally would (we recommend the double cleanse method)
Step 2: Pat dry your face with a clean towel (or leave it to air dry) it’s best to apply the first layer when your skin is slightly damp.
Step 3: Apply the toner/essence with clean hands and pat into skin, repeat this up to seven times depending on your skin and how it feels.
Mask Time Tip: It’s as easy at that! Your skin should feel plump and hydrated, don’t forget to lock in all in with a moisturiser!
MISTAKES TO AVOID:
Now we’ve explained what it is and how to do, we want to make sure that you’re doing this correctly, so let’s address some things that you should look out for and avoid!
IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE 7
If you’re starting out, we really recommend that you ease into this method! More isn’t always better and you should find out what YOUR ideal number of layers is. Everyone’s skin is different, some people may need more some less, always listen to your skin. To start with we recommend 3 layers and from there you can see if you want to add more, as sometimes too much of a good thing can lead to irritated skin or breakouts!
USING THE WRONG PRODUCT
This 7 Skin Method is totally safe to do as long as the toner/essence you’re applying is ALCOHOL FREE (also listed as ethanol or ethyl alcohol, denatured alcohol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, SD alcohol, and benzyl alcohol) because you do not want to be stripping your skin which can lead to irritation and dryness the OPPOSITE of what we are trying to achieve!
FRAGRANCE free is also another thing you should look out for, this applied too much can lead to skin sensitivity and irritation. Having too many ingredients, a high concentration of some ingredients and it being a rich texture is not a good to use either, it can leave skin feeling greasy and heavy leading to blocked pores!
We recommend choosing a slightly runny, watery texture with minimal ingredients and for your skin type!
ONLY USING ONE PRODUCT
Yes we did mention that finding that right product is KEY, but also mixing a toner AND an essence can be super beneficial to your skin and a reason why you might not be seeing any changes if you just stick to one toner.
Essences as long as they are lightweight, not too nutritious and non-irritating can really enhance the 7 Skin Method.
We recommend mixing: start off with a few layers of your chosen toner and then the last few layers with your chosen essence!
Mask Time Tip: Remember to listen to your skin, if you feel like the essence is better for you replace the toner with an essence!
DOING IT AM & PM
If your skin is more oil or combination or if you need to wear makeup, we don’t really recommend doing this method during the day as it can make your makeup easy to slide off and over saturating your skin can lead to breakouts or clogged pores.
The best time to do this method is in the evening, where your skin can rest and really soak up all those layers and repair itself when you’re sleeping!
However, if you have severely dehydrated or dry skin, doing this AM and PM will have skin looking much more fresh and hydrated!
MISSING THE EYE AREA
Ok, we’ve all been told to avoid the eye area for almost everything but that doesn’t mean you can’t go close to the eye area. The eye area is where your skin is the thinnest so applying product just under the eye will give that extra hydration as long as your product isn’t too heavy. Or you can always apply some eye cream first before you do the layers!
TIME INBETWEEN LAYERS
Just slapping on multiple layers all in one go defeats the whole purpose of the 7 Skin Method! You will need to make sure that each layer has absorbed into your skin before you apply the next, it may sound time consuming but you’ll be surprised how quickly your skin soaks up product especially if it’s dehydrated! That also doesn’t mean you have to wait for your skin to be bone dry before you add the next layer, just make sure you leave at least 10 seconds between each layer. You don’t want to overwhelm your skin by piling on so much product remember patience is virtue!
Mask Time Tip: To speed up the process and to make it more hygienic, try putting your toner or essence into a mist or spray bottle. This way you don’t lose any product when applying it with your hands and it doesn’t get soaked up into a cotton pad!
It’s super important to prep your skin, exfoliating once or twice a week will really help to remove those dead skin cells that sit on top of your skin. You don’t want to be putting on layers of product and not have it fully absorbed because of all that dead skin!
Mask Time Tip: Before you start applying your layers, use a cotton pad with either water or cleansing water to gently exfoliate the skin.
NOT SEALING THE DEAL
After the 7 Skin Method don’t let all that hard work go to waste! Seal up all that goodness with a moisturiser or facial oil.
OUR TWO PENNIES WORTH:
So we have been trying this new beauty regime for two weeks now and here’s our thoughts on it!
For those with dehydrated and dull skin it really has changed our skincare game, gone were the flakiness, fine lines were literally gone and skin felt youthful, plump and super healthy like it had this inner glow!
Combination to oily skin we had to be careful with what products we used and also how many layers we applied but it really helped with any redness, blemishes were less and skin didn’t look as angry! We also noticed that the skin wasn’t as oily even though we were adding more moisture than usual!
At the end of the day, everyone has different skin and you really need to work out what is best for you, 3 Skin, 5 Skin or 7 Skin! We really liked this method and have already incorporated it into our daily skincare routine!
